Bertram is a small city in Burnet County at the northern edge of the Texas Hill Country, serving as an agricultural and ranching community on the edge of the Llano Uplift. It's connected to Austin via the MetroRail line — one of the few rural Hill Country-adjacent communities with commuter rail service.
Bertram is an authentic small Texas agricultural town — a functioning county-road community with a grain elevator, feed stores, and the working infrastructure of ranch country. The community has grown modestly as rural residents seek affordable land within commuting range of Austin, and the MetroRail connection has given it unusual connectivity for a town its size.
Burnet County terrain — The area around Bertram transitions from Hill Country limestone into the pink granite of the Llano Uplift, creating geologically interesting and visually striking terrain.
San Gabriel River — The upper San Gabriel and its tributaries provide fishing and wildlife watching in the rural landscape around Bertram.
Proximity to Burnet and the Highland Lakes — Burnet is about 12 miles west and provides access to the Highland Lakes, Longhorn Cavern, and Inks Lake State Park.
Bertram sits at the intersection of TX-29 and US-183 in Burnet County, about 45 miles northwest of Austin. Take US-183 north from Austin or TX-29 west from Georgetown. The MetroRail does not currently extend to Bertram, though there have been discussions about future expansion.
