Blanco is one of the Hill Country's best-kept secrets — a small county seat on the Blanco River with a beautifully restored courthouse square, a thriving craft beer scene, and a pace of life that feels genuinely removed from the city. It sits at the geographic center of the Hill Country, making it an ideal base for exploring the broader region.

Character & Vibe

The Blanco courthouse square is a textbook example of a 19th-century Texas county seat — limestone storefronts facing a central square with a historic courthouse at its heart. The square has been steadily filling with quality businesses: wine bars, a lavender farm market, restaurants, and the Blanco Bowling Club, which has been in continuous operation since 1952 and serves as an unofficial community center.

The Blanco River runs just below the square and provides excellent swimming, fishing, and kayaking access. The combination of the river, the historic square, and the relatively low profile the town has maintained makes Blanco one of the most authentically Hill Country experiences available.

Things to Do

Blanco State Park — A small but excellent state park right in town, straddling the Blanco River with swimming, fishing, paddling, and camping. One of the most accessible state parks in the Hill Country.

Real Ale Brewing Company — One of the pioneering Texas craft breweries, Real Ale has been operating in Blanco since 1996. The brewery campus offers tours and tastings and has become a destination for craft beer enthusiasts.

Blanco Lavender Festival — Each June, the Hill Country Lavender farms around Blanco bloom in spectacular purple fields. The festival draws visitors from across the state for lavender picking, products, and live music.

Old Blanco County Courthouse — The 1885 courthouse is one of the finest examples of Second Empire architecture in Texas. It now serves as a venue and museum and anchors the historic square.

Palo Alto Creek Farm — A working lavender farm offering tours and a charming shop during blooming season.

Food & Drink

Redbud Café anchors the courthouse square with excellent breakfast and lunch. The Blanco Bowling Club Café serves burgers and cold beer in one of the most atmospheric old-school settings in the Hill Country. Real Ale's taproom is a must for craft beer fans. Several wine bars have opened around the square in recent years, reflecting the broader Hill Country wine culture.

Local Tips

  • Blanco is quieter than Fredericksburg or Wimberley — that's the point. Come here when you want the Hill Country without the crowds.
  • The Blanco River swimming is excellent — the state park and several public access points provide great spots.
  • Lavender season (late May/June) brings crowds — the festival weekend is particularly busy.
  • It's an easy drive from Wimberley (20 miles) and Johnson City (14 miles) — combine them for a great day loop.

Getting There

Blanco sits on US-281, about 45 miles west of Austin and 15 miles south of Johnson City. From San Antonio, take US-281 north for about 55 miles.
