Burnet (pronounced "BUR-net" by locals — rhymes with "durn it") is the self-proclaimed Bluebonnet Capital of Texas and the commercial hub of the Highland Lakes area. A working county seat with deep ranching roots, it offers genuine small-town Texas authenticity alongside easy access to some of the most spectacular highland lake scenery in the state.
Burnet operates on rancher's time. The courthouse square has a hardware store that's been in business for decades, a pharmacy with a lunch counter, and the kind of local businesses that serve the surrounding agricultural community first and tourists second. That's not a slight — it's an asset. Burnet feels real in a way that more polished Hill Country destinations sometimes don't.
Lake Buchanan and Inks Lake are the natural anchors of the area, and the combination of rugged granite hills, spring-fed lakes, and wide-open ranchland makes the Burnet County landscape some of the most dramatic in Central Texas.
Longhorn Cavern State Park — One of the most historically rich cave systems in Texas. Confederate soldiers reportedly used the cavern to manufacture gunpowder during the Civil War, and it later served as a dance hall and tourist attraction. The formations are impressive and the history is fascinating.
Inks Lake State Park — About 9 miles west, Inks Lake is unique among the Highland Lakes in maintaining a nearly constant water level. The result is excellent camping, paddling, swimming, and hiking year-round.
Lake Buchanan — The largest of the Highland Lakes, Buchanan stretches 23 miles through the granite hills of Llano and Burnet counties. Fishing for striped bass and catfish is excellent. The Vanishing Texas River Cruise offers naturalist-led boat tours that are exceptional for birding and wildlife watching.
Bluebonnet season — In March and April, the roads around Burnet are blanketed with Texas bluebonnets. The city celebrates with a Bluebonnet Festival each April that draws massive crowds.
Spider Mountain Bike Park — The only lift-served mountain bike park in the southern US, located on the shores of Lake Buchanan. A genuine destination for mountain bikers.
The Burnet dining scene is honest Texas food — barbecue, Tex-Mex, burgers, and diners. Boomerang Grill is a local favorite. For a lake experience, the marinas around Lake Buchanan and Inks Lake have restaurants worth the drive. The Highland Lakes area has seen growing craft beverage interest, with a few wineries and one cidery operating in the area.
Burnet sits at the intersection of US-281 and TX-29, about 65 miles northwest of Austin. Take US-183 north to US-281 north, or TX-71 west to US-281 north.
