Camp Wood is one of the most remote and beautiful communities in the Texas Hill Country — a small town in Real County on the Nueces River, surrounded by some of the most rugged and spectacular limestone canyon country in the state. It's genuine frontier Texas: remote, quiet, and extraordinarily scenic.
Camp Wood sits in the Nueces River canyon with dramatic limestone bluffs rising above the clear, cold river. The town has a handful of businesses serving the surrounding ranch community, and the recreation draw is entirely natural — fishing, camping, swimming, and hunting. This is not a tourist-infrastructure town; it's a working ranching community in beautiful country that welcomes visitors who come for the right reasons.
Nueces River — The primary draw. The Nueces runs clear and cold through limestone canyons around Camp Wood, offering exceptional fishing for bass, catfish, and in cooler months, trout stocking. Camping on the river is a genuine backcountry experience.
Chalk Bluff Park — A private park on the Nueces River near Uvalde (accessible on the way to Camp Wood) with camping, river access, and dramatic chalk bluff scenery.
Scenic drives — The roads through Real County and surrounding Uvalde and Edwards counties pass through some of the most dramatic canyon country in Texas. The drive from Leakey to Camp Wood on TX-55 is particularly beautiful.
Hunting — Real County is prime Hill Country hunting territory for white-tailed deer, turkey, and other game. Hunting leases and guided hunts are a significant part of the local economy.
Frio River Canyon — Nearby Leakey on the Frio River provides additional river recreation options in similarly spectacular canyon terrain.
Camp Wood sits on TX-55 in Real County, about 100 miles west of San Antonio. Take US-90 west from San Antonio to Uvalde, then TX-55 north through Barksdale to Camp Wood. Alternatively, take TX-83 north from Uvalde to Leakey, then TX-55 south.
