Driftwood is a small unincorporated community in Hays County southwest of Austin that has become synonymous with two things: legendary Texas barbecue and the emerging Texas wine country on its southern edge. Set in rolling cedar and live oak terrain between Austin, Dripping Springs, and Wimberley, it offers a genuinely rural Hill Country experience while remaining accessible to the Austin metro.
The Salt Lick BBQ — This is why most people outside the immediate area know the name Driftwood. The Salt Lick has been serving barbecue on this property since 1967, and the original location — with its massive open pit, BYOB policy, and family-style service under cedar trees — is one of the quintessential Texas barbecue experiences. The waits can be long but the setting alone is worth the trip.
Driftwood Estate Winery — One of several wineries operating in the Driftwood area, taking advantage of the limestone soils and elevation that have made this part of Hays County increasingly interesting to wine producers.
Texas Hill Country Olive Co. — Just down the road in nearby Dripping Springs, this working olive farm and tasting room is accessible as part of a Driftwood day.
Rolling terrain and ranch roads — The farm and ranch roads around Driftwood provide excellent cycling and scenic driving through classic Hill Country landscape.
The Salt Lick is the dominant food destination, but the broader area has grown to support several quality options. The proximity to Dripping Springs (about 8 miles) brings its craft distillery and brewery corridor within easy range. Wimberley's restaurant scene is about 15 miles south. The combination makes Driftwood an excellent hub for a day of eating and drinking in the Hill Country.
Driftwood sits on FM-150 about 25 miles southwest of Austin. Take MoPac south to TX-45 west to FM-1826 south to FM-150 west, or take US-290 west to Dripping Springs then FM-150 east.
