Marble Falls is the Highland Lakes' anchor city — a compact, friendly town on the Colorado River where the Texas Hill Country meets a chain of six lakes stretching from Austin to Llano. It's a town built for the outdoors, with boating, fishing, hiking, and swimming all accessible within minutes of the main street.

Character & Vibe

Marble Falls has grown considerably in recent years as Austinites discover the Highland Lakes corridor, but it retains the feel of a genuine small city with real civic life. Main Street runs a few blocks along the Colorado River with local restaurants, shops, and the kind of hardware stores and feed suppliers that remind you this is still working ranch country. The lake access is the primary draw — Lake Marble Falls sits essentially in the backyard of downtown, and Lake LBJ and Inks Lake are just a short drive away.

The sunsets over the Highland Lakes from Marble Falls are legendary. The red granite and limestone hills catch the evening light in a way that explains why so many people have chosen to retire here.

Things to Do

Lakeside Park — A city park right on Lake Marble Falls with boat ramps, a swimming area, picnic facilities, and some of the best lake views in town. Free and open daily.

Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge — North of town, this refuge protects critical habitat for the endangered golden-cheeked warbler and black-capped vireo. Excellent birding especially in spring.

Falls Creek Ranch & Winery — One of several wineries in the area taking advantage of the Highland Lakes terroir.

Enchanted Rock — About 40 miles northwest, the massive granite dome is an easy day trip from Marble Falls.

Inks Lake State Park — Just 12 miles north, Inks Lake is considered one of the gems of the Texas state park system — constant water levels, beautiful camping, paddling, and swimming.

Food & Drink

Cafe 1209 is consistently rated among the best breakfast and lunch spots in the Highland Lakes area. The Bluebonnet Café has been a local institution for decades — the pies alone are worth a stop. For barbecue, Opie's Barbecue in nearby Spicewood draws crowds from across the region. The craft beer scene has arrived with a few taprooms now operating in and around downtown.

Music & Events

Marble Falls hosts the Highland Lakes Bluegrass Festival each spring, drawing pickers and fans from across Texas. The Fourth of July celebration over the lake is one of the better fireworks displays in the Hill Country. The Main Street Farmers Market runs on Saturdays during warmer months.

Local Tips

  • Lake access varies by season — the Highland Lakes are controlled by LCRA and water levels fluctuate. Check before planning water activities.
  • The drive between Marble Falls and Burnet on US-281 is beautiful — especially in spring wildflower season.
  • Granite Shoals and Horseshoe Bay are the lake communities nearby if you're looking for more resort-style options.
  • Retirement communities are significant here — services and amenities are generally excellent as a result.

Getting There

Marble Falls sits on US-281, about 50 miles northwest of Austin. Take US-183 north to US-281 north, or take TX-71 west to US-281 north. From San Antonio, take US-281 north for about 80 miles.
