Spicewood is a small, unincorporated community in Travis and Burnet counties on the western shore of Lake Travis — a place where the Hill Country meets the Highland Lakes in some of the most dramatic landscape in Central Texas. Known primarily among Austin-area residents as the home of excellent barbecue and beautiful lakeside terrain, Spicewood offers an authentically rural Hill Country experience within 45 minutes of Austin.
Lake Travis — The western stretches of Lake Travis accessible from Spicewood are among the least crowded sections of the lake. The rugged limestone shoreline and clear water make this an excellent area for boating, fishing, and anchoring in quiet coves.
Krause Springs — A private natural swimming area with 32 springs feeding a series of pools that cascade into Lake Travis. One of the most beautiful and unique swimming experiences in the Hill Country — the combination of spring-fed pools and lakeside access is genuinely special. Day passes available seasonally.
Pedernales Falls State Park — About 15 miles south on TX-71, this park features the Pedernales River cascading over dramatic limestone formations. Hiking, swimming, and camping available.
Hamilton Pool Road — The scenic road connecting Spicewood to Hamilton Pool Preserve and Dripping Springs winds through limestone canyon country and is one of the best Hill Country drives in the Austin area.
Opie's Barbecue is the reason many Austin-area residents know where Spicewood is. This roadside BBQ spot on TX-71 has built a devoted regional following for its brisket, ribs, and sausage. The line on weekends tells you everything you need to know. Beyond Opie's, Spicewood has limited dining options — it's a community of ranches, lake houses, and wineries rather than a commercial hub.
Spicewood Vineyards has been producing Texas wine here since 1992 — one of the veteran operations in the Texas wine industry, with tastings available on the estate.
Spicewood sits along TX-71 about 35 miles west of Austin. Take TX-71 west from Austin through Bee Cave and Lakeway. From Marble Falls, take TX-71 east about 15 miles.
