Wimberley is the Hill Country's creative soul — a small town on the Blanco River that has attracted artists, musicians, writers, and free spirits for decades. Tucked into a cypress-shaded valley where Cypress Creek meets the Blanco River, it's one of the most beautiful natural settings in Central Texas and one of the most fiercely independent communities in the region.
Wimberley operates on its own schedule. The town square, anchored by the Market Days grounds, fills with vendors and visitors on the first Saturday of each month from April through December. The rest of the time it's a quiet, artsy community where the emphasis is on quality of life — swimming holes, hiking trails, studio tours, and front-porch sitting.
The population swells considerably on weekends with Austinites making the 45-mile drive, but Wimberley has managed to absorb the growth without losing the character that makes people want to come in the first place. The food, the shops, and the outdoor experiences are genuinely good — not just trading on the Hill Country name.
Jacob's Well Natural Area — One of the most photographed spots in Texas, Jacob's Well is a spring-fed vertical cave that opens into a crystal-clear swimming hole. The water is perpetually cool and startlingly clear. Entry requires advance reservations and fills up fast — book weeks ahead in summer.
Blue Hole Regional Park — A spring-fed swimming hole on Cypress Creek with a rope swing, towering cypress trees, and one of the most idyllic swimming environments in the Hill Country. Requires day-use passes booked in advance during peak season.
Devil's Backbone — The scenic drive along Ranch to Market Road 32 between Wimberley and Blanco follows a dramatic limestone ridge with sweeping views of the Hill Country. One of the great scenic drives in Texas.
Wimberley Square — The town center with galleries, boutiques, restaurants, and wine bars. The shopping here is genuinely curated — local artisans, Texas-made goods, and independent shops rather than chains.
Wimberley Valley Winery — One of several tasting rooms in the area, with a relaxed outdoor setting that exemplifies the Wimberley pace.
Leaning Pear has built a reputation as one of the best restaurants in the Hill Country, with a creative menu anchored in local ingredients and a beautiful garden setting. Creekside Dining at Cypress Creek Café is the classic Wimberley meal — patio seating over the creek, casual but excellent food. Oak & Olive brings a wine bar sensibility to the square. For something casual, the food trucks around the square offer solid options throughout the week.
Wimberley Market Days on the first Saturday of the month is the signature event — an outdoor market with hundreds of vendors spread across the Market Days grounds. Live music fills the square on weekends at various venues and restaurants. The Wimberley Film Festival each fall is a growing event drawing independent cinema to the Hill Country.
Wimberley sits about 45 miles southwest of Austin via TX-290 west and TX-12 south. From San Antonio, take IH-35 north to Kyle then TX-150 west — about 60 miles. From Fredericksburg, take US-290 east to Dripping Springs then TX-12 south.
