Bandera calls itself the Cowboy Capital of the World, and it earns the title. This small town on the Medina River in Bandera County has been ranching country since the 1850s and continues to celebrate that heritage with a conviction that goes well beyond marketing. Guest ranches, rodeos, dance halls, and genuine working ranch culture make Bandera one of the most distinctive communities in the Hill Country.

Things to Do

Hill Country State Natural Area — One of the largest state natural areas in Texas, with over 5,000 acres of rugged limestone hills, spring-fed creeks, and some of the best equestrian and mountain biking trails in the state. No motorized vehicles — horses, bikes, and boots only.

Frontier Times Museum — A wonderfully eccentric collection of frontier-era artifacts, curiosities, and historical documents that captures the spirit of 19th-century Texas in a way that slicker museums often miss.

Medina River — The river running through town provides swimming, fishing, and tubing access. The swimming hole at Medina has been a local gathering place for generations.

Guest ranches — Bandera has more guest ranches per capita than almost anywhere in Texas. The experience ranges from working cattle drives to luxury accommodations with trail rides.
