Canyon Lake is one of the most popular recreational lakes in Texas — a Corps of Engineers reservoir on the upper Guadalupe River in Comal County, set in dramatic Hill Country terrain with 80 miles of shoreline and year-round clear, cool water. It's a genuine outdoor recreation destination that draws boaters, swimmers, divers, and campers from across South Texas.

What to See & Do

Canyon Lake itself — The 8,240-acre reservoir is the primary draw. Crystal-clear water, dramatic limestone bluffs, and consistent conditions make it one of the best recreational lakes in the Hill Country. Swimming, boating, water skiing, wake surfing, fishing, and scuba diving are all popular.

Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake — The cold, clear water released from Canyon Lake Dam stays between 52-64°F year-round, creating world-class conditions for trout fishing and kayaking. The stretch from Canyon Dam to New Braunfels is one of the most popular river recreation corridors in Texas.

Canyon Lake Gorge — A geological wonder created by a massive flood in 2002 that carved a new canyon through 100 million-year-old limestone, exposing dinosaur tracks and marine fossils. Guided tours through Guadalupe County are available seasonally.

Overlook Park — Corps of Engineers park at the dam with spectacular views across the lake and into the Hill Country beyond.

Food & Drink

The Canyon Lake area has a growing restaurant scene serving the large residential lake community. The commercial corridors along FM-2673 and the Canyon City area have a range of casual dining and convenience options. For more extensive dining, New Braunfels is about 15 miles east and offers the full range of a larger city's food scene.

Music & Events

The Canyon Lake area hosts boat-in concerts and lakeside events during the warmer months. The surrounding community's growth has brought more regular programming to local venues.

Local Tips

  • Canyon Lake is primarily residential — plan your boat ramp access, parking, and facilities carefully before arriving.
  • The Guadalupe River trout fishing below the dam is exceptional and unusual for Texas — water temperatures support a year-round trout fishery.
  • Summer weekends are extremely crowded — the lake draws massive numbers from San Antonio and Austin. Weekdays are dramatically more pleasant.
  • Canyon Lake Gorge tours require advance reservations and fill up during peak season.

Getting There

Canyon Lake sits on FM-2673 about 25 miles northwest of New Braunfels and 45 miles north of San Antonio. From San Antonio, take IH-35 north to Canyon Lake Road (FM-306) west, or take US-281 north to FM-2673.
