Johnson City is a small, unhurried town in the heart of Blanco County that punches far above its weight in terms of things to do and places worth visiting. Best known as the birthplace and hometown of President Lyndon B. Johnson, it sits at the crossroads of US-290 and US-281 — the intersection of the Texas wine trail and the wildflower highway — which puts it in the middle of some of the most scenic driving in the state.
Things to Do
LBJ National Historic Park & State Park sit just east and west of town, preserving the ranch where the 36th president grew up, lived, and is buried. The Texas White House and the surrounding working ranch land are open for tours and offer a remarkably intimate window into mid-century Texas life.
Pedernales Falls State Park — About 9 miles east, the Pedernales River cascades over a series of limestone ledges in one of the most dramatic and accessible natural features in the Hill Country. Swimming, hiking, tubing, and camping are all available.
Wine tasting — Johnson City sits in the sweet spot of the Texas wine trail. Pedernales Cellars, just east of town, produces some of the most acclaimed Texas wines. Several other tasting rooms operate within a short drive.
The downtown has a few excellent restaurants, most notably Pecan Street Brewing, which pairs craft beer with a solid food menu in a renovated historic building. The Exotic Resort Zoo just north of town is a unique drive-through wildlife experience with animals from around the world. Johnson City hosts a spectacular Christmas Lights display each December that draws visitors from across the region — the town transforms into an extraordinary light show from Thanksgiving through New Year's.
