Dripping Springs has transformed in the past decade from a quiet bedroom community west of Austin into one of the most vibrant small cities in the Hill Country — earning the nickname "The Gateway to the Hill Country" and building a remarkable concentration of distilleries, breweries, wineries, and restaurants along the US-290 corridor.
Dripping Springs lives at the intersection of Austin's creative, food-forward culture and the Hill Country's natural beauty. It's close enough to Austin (about 25 miles) to draw serious chefs, craft beverage makers, and tech workers seeking more space, while being far enough to feel genuinely rural when you step off the main road. The result is a community with excellent food and drink options set against Hill Country landscape.
The wedding venue industry is enormous here — Hamilton Pool Road and the surrounding countryside host dozens of event venues that draw weddings every weekend from across the state.
Hamilton Pool Preserve — One of the most beautiful natural swimming holes in Texas, where a collapsed grotto has created a jade-green pool beneath a 50-foot waterfall. Reservations required; the pool fills up months in advance in summer.
Pedernales Falls State Park — About 15 miles west, the Pedernales River creates a series of dramatic cascades over limestone shelves. Excellent hiking, swimming, tubing, and camping.
Distillery & Brewery Trail — Dripping Springs has become the craft spirits capital of Texas, with Treaty Oak Distilling, Deep Eddy Vodka, Dripping Springs Vodka, and numerous others operating along the US-290 corridor. Most offer tours and tastings.
Mercer Street — The historic downtown strip with local shops, a beloved Saturday farmers market, and the kind of small-town main street energy that stands in contrast to the commercial growth along the highway.
The food scene here reflects the Austin influence. Tillie's is a standout for creative Texas cooking. Pieous has built a devoted following for its wood-fired pizza and pie combinations. The Salt Lick — the legendary BBQ institution — has a location on the edge of town. The craft beverage landscape is unmatched in a city this size: Treaty Oak has a full restaurant and bar complex, and several breweries offer taproom experiences worth an afternoon.
The Dripping Springs Songwriters Festival each spring draws serious Americana and singer-songwriter talent. Treaty Oak's campus hosts regular live music events. The area's wedding venue culture means live music is essentially happening somewhere every weekend.
Dripping Springs sits on US-290 about 25 miles west of Austin. Take US-290 west from downtown Austin or MoPac south to TX-45 west to US-290. From San Antonio, take IH-10 west to TX-16 north to US-290 east, or take US-281 north to US-290.
